Euro Road Trip Recap: Day 5 - Avignon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Wine

Day 5, the last day before returning to St. Gallen was a peaceful, sunny day. We found ourselves in Avignon in the afternoon, where the old city is still surrounded by a magnificent stone wall fortification.

Our first stop was at the Palais des Papes (or Palace of the Popes), the former residence of the popes when they fled the corruption and chaos in Rome during the 1300s.

Walking to the top uncovered views of the Rhône River and the Le Pont Saint-Benezet, a bridge built in the middle ages, but has since been badly damaged by flooding (as you can tell by the fact the bridge leads to no where in the picture).

Next, we hopped back into the car and headed north to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a village best known for its wine. After driving through back roads and only relying on road signs (sans GPS), we miraculously found one of the 3 random wineries we printed information about on the Internet.

The Domaine de Beaurenard was the first winery I have ever been to, and to my surprise, let us freely roam around their facilities without a guide. Thus, the following events were allowed to ensue:

After we finished, we sat down at the bar for some good ol' fashioned wine tasting, leading Scott to comment after his 6th glass, "I really didn't need to taste that last one, I just wanted to get more drunk."

Another winery later and more tasting, we promptly took the keys away from Scott, put him in the back seat, and concluded the day driving back to Switzerland.

when i saw that picture with the wine barrels, i was so sure the next line was going to be "viphak tripped and all the wine barrels came rolling down the hill. please send money because we're all still here working off the debt."
